Britnoth (or Byrhtnoth, or Beorhtnoth), died 10 or 11 August 991

Leader of the Anglo-Saxon army which was defeated at Maldon in August 991 in the reign of Ethelred the Unready, commemorated in an Old English poem, a fragment of which remains, describing the last stand of Britnoth’s men. Known as a benefactor of Ely Abbey, his headless body was brought to Ely for burial and over a thousand years later his remains still lie in the Cathedral, in the chapel at the east end of the south quire aisle.
